i bought a similar app a few years back. whenever the ipad 2 launched. i used it 3-4 times on highway road trips.

here are the two fatal flaws to the system.

1. the coppers move. yes, they tend to be in the same spots frequently, but any given "post" is likely going to be out-dated within 10-20 minutes of its posting. so lots of "false negatives." unless the members are hyper diligent in both posting and deleting.

2. posting the location of a bogey requires more interaction with my phone/ipad than i'd care to provide when traveling at speed. so i contributed to the lack of consistency with #1

The app is not a bad idea.

Cops should be worrying about stopping criminals than worrying about tickets for easy revenue.

Around Oak Ridge in TN, there are a ton of speed traps because they know the y-12 and doe plant workers are not allowed to carry guns and that it is a safe and easy pullover.

All they do is speed trap all damn day rather than keeping the crime rate down. All though the crime rate is not bad, it's annoying knowing that they are negligent in their job.

I can't really blame them for wanting to be safe though, but that's not why you become a cop.

Yeah cause I guess a few weeks ago when I went back into the burning house from which I had helped get a handicapped lady to save her dog that was cowering in a closet makes me a "shit cunt". Or maybe the time a couple of months ago when I did CPR on a guy that had a heart attack and had stopped breathing. Keeping him alive until the squad got on scene qualifies me as a "shit cunt". Or maybe the hour or so I spent last week consoling the grieving mother who went to her son's house and found him dead, that certainly is the stuff of "shit cunts".

I have the app and use it frequently. Like the other Oppo's said, the cops will move around so there will always be false positives. Secondly, I think it's extremely ironic that there's a chat feature on the app. One can simply bypass this by simply stating they're a 'passenger'.

EYES ON ROAD PEOPLE!!!

sarcasm over the internet never has been a strongpoint of mine, apologies if you took offense

but good job on not being a shit cunt who kills unarmed civilians and blames the media and the mayor on public backlash.

I just wonder what unarmed civilian you're talking about. The 300+lb stoned guy who had just committed a robbery then assaulted the cop then tried to get the cops gun (aggravated robbery under Ohio law) then, after fleeing, turned and charged the cop?

Or maybe the 350 lb obese guy who had asthma and was actively resisting arrest?

There are certainly asshole cops just as there are asshole doctors, teachers, garbage men, etc., and even good ones aren't perfect. But this myth that you can just be walking down the street minding your own business and the cops will show up and shoot you is utter bullshit. And I hope the asshats perpetuating this tripe know they are helping to create a more dangerous society by ensuring police are less likely to vigorously do there jobs.

It's always the worst examples who stand out the most, and the public generally goes off what is seen on the news. Good cops don't make headlines like bad cops do.

Thank you for being one of the good ones. Please keep your head up and know that it's appreciated.

It's just like any car scene - people genuinely want to have a good time and appreciate the shared love of cars, but some assholes inevitably ruin every meet and give us a bad rap. Just keep on trying to make the world a better place.

On the subject though, I see nothing wrong with this app (never mind the fact that the point of the app is for traffic awareness, not cop tracking) and think that if you are a LEO you are subject to the same rules as everybody else. There is no big uproar about the fact that the app alerts you if people report a vehicle stopped on the shoulder. What is the difference? If there is a police car, people will slow down and drive more cautiously meaning that you should be aware that traffic conditions will likely change coming up. The same thing happens when a vehicle is stopped on the shoulder - people generally will slow down or change lanes (depending on region and other factors in the situation). I think this is just a terrible example of things that don't need to be "news" and should just be laughed at then dismissed.

What part of 'put your hands behind your back' don't people understand... Never ceases to amaze me. I'm white and I know better than to resist arrest, it's not always a race thing.

Thanks for the kind words. A guy who was retiring when I started told me to treat everyone like I would like to be treated if the roles were reversed. I've always tried to follow that advice.

As to the app, I see nothing wrong with it either. If someone wants to find me they don't need an app to do it. If I'm not on a call or at the station typing a report I'm usually parked along one of the several high speed streets in the city I work, right out in the open so people will see me and slow down (but I'm usually either reading a book or screwing around on my phone, not looking at the radar). People walk/drive up and talk too me everyday.

Me either. Got a little aggravated by the "shit cunt" posts and forgot to mention that.

If anyone in the city in which I work is looking for me, and called the station and I wasn't there or on a call, it would probably take them 10 mins to drive around and find me. I'm usually parked in one of three spots, right out in the open where everyone can see me.

listen man, I'm sorry you took my shit cunt post to heart. my intentions weren't clear and probably serve to muddy and worsen the conversation.

I don't want to diminish the good work you do, but I'm also not going to pretend that just because you're a good guy that there isn't a problem with police killings in the USA.

Oppo isn't the place for me to go on though, and I apologize again for being a shit cunt.

Takes a decent person to apologize, so I completely accept.

I will just leave you with one question. Do you really think there are lots of cops (hell, even a small percentage of cops) who want to kill anyone, especially innocent people? Take out the moral issue; the thought that you killed someone and how that might effect you, you still have the grand jury and the possibility of being indicted (where I work if a cop were to shoot someone there is no doubt it would go to a grand jury) and maybe found guilty, the anal exam from the department so they can claim you didn't follow some obscure policy (our policy manual is about 1000 pages thick, I've no idea what's in there) so they can leave you out to dry in the inevitable law suit that will follow in which you'd have to worry about losing everything. Do you really think guys (and gals) want to go through that?

Enough from me. Have a good night.
